Since 1996 The Colborne Architectural Group Pacific has carried out the design and implementation of several science lab projects for the Departments of Biology, Chemistry and Kinesiology at Simon Fraser University. Projects typically entail the re-planning and re-construction of existing lab facilities to suit new research programs or to replace worn fixtures, equipment and implement technology upgrades. Projects involve a full range of lab design issues from the coordination of fully-serviced work benches, incorporating specialized lab equipment, designing animal-handling areas or providing new mechanical and electrical systems including lighting and computer networks. Project budgets typically range from $100K to $250K.

An example project is a 2,100 sq. ft. Kinesiology research lab created in 1997-'98 from in-filling an underutilized 2 storey robotic testing lab within the existing Shrum Science Complex. Designed to meet CCAC design standards for animal handling, the new lab required small animal holding (rats, rabbits), preparation and operation areas as well as fully-serviced lab benches, fume hoods, refrigeration and freezer storage. New administrative office and informal teaching areas were serviced with new HVAC, lighting and communication systems as well as specialized research equipment to suit the needs of a newly appointed Research Fellow.
