For Pacific Building Systems of Cobble Hill (Duncan) and their construction division, Canarc Construction Ltd. of Surrey, BC, the Colborne Architectural Group Pacific Inc. was asked to coordinate the design for a 72,000 sq. ft. RONA Homecentre for retail building materials and hardware. The project is part of the larger 38 acre Cowichan Commons, a large-format retail development (Walmart, London Drugs, Specialty Foods, etc.) located on Vancouver Island's central Trans-Canada Highway.
The main structure is an all-steel, pre-engineered 25 ft. high structure enclosing retail and 'warehouse' drive-through function for construction product sales aimed primarily at building contractors. A custom two-storey, wood and stone detailed entry structure with 2nd floor administrative offices and adjacent glazed 'Garden Centre' have been incorporated to appeal to the walk-in homeowner. Employee support and training areas with shipping - receiving facilities are also incorporated as well as secure yard storage for bulk construction materials.
A similar but smaller Homecentre (35, 000 sq. ft.) with yard and storage facilities commenced construction in July 2006 just down the Island Highway for the same owner at Cobble Hill. A future RONA is planned for Nanaimo, BC.
