The Colborne Architectural Group was architectural sub-consultant
to Sandwell Inc. for the design of this major new Power Boiler project at MacMillan
Bloedel's Powell River pulp and paper complex. The objective of the project
was to optimize the burning of wood waste products through the use of a high-efficiency
fluidized sand bed boiler facility which produced steam for power and plant
production purposes.
Our role in this project focused on the architectural components of the complex;
cladding and roofing systems, design of the control room, electrical equipment
rooms, laboratory and staff areas. The control room of this building is to act
as a central control facility for several major parts of the plant, by consolidating
several existing subcenters into the new room. Exterior cladding systems continue
the Powell River gold colour scheme used elsewhere in the Plant, with a deep
blue accent colour used to express louvres and doors. Documentation was produced
to suit a fast-track, multiple tender process. The project began construction
in the fall of 1996, with completion in December 1997. Total project value was
approximately $120 million.
