Constructed in 1958, this well-used 4,400-sq. ft. 'community hall' located in south-east Vancouver was proposed for a new focus as a community 'artist's centre'. In December 1998, the Vancouver Park Board commissioned the Colborne Architectural Group Pacific Inc. to guide this project through design and construction. The existing 1-storey plus partial basement post & beam 'modernist' building included a 150 person main hall with stage and badly dated support facilities. With a limited budget, the user program required expanded 'multi-function' space to support a variety of community activities, particularly artist's programs; enlarged kitchen / servery; new administrative/box office for main hall events and fully-reorganized public washrooms to support both building and field sports.
The proposed design reorganizes all interior spaces except the main hall and Caretaker's suite which is slated for future upgrade. A partitioned lounge with new south-facing windows is created off the main hall; the kitchen is expanded and fully updated; the basement level is connected using a new, central stair. The building is made fully accessible to disabled persons with emphasis on washrooms and provision for a future elevator. At the main entry, a new free-standing steel frame and timber roof canopy is introduced to create a protected outdoor gathering space integrated with an 'undulating' concrete walkway and plaza incorporating artist-designed mosaic tile inlays. Renovations also include updated mechanical-electrical systems, new exterior painting, security lighting and various soft landscape and paving improvements. Construction cost, $350K, 1999.
