In the spring of 1990, The Colborne Architectural Group was appointed by the City of Scarborough's Parks Department to design a public amenities building in a new 77 acre regional park. The building was to provide washrooms, a fast food concession, multi-purpose room for programmed events and public information centre as phase 1 of a larger complex of arts and special use buildings to form 'Scarborough Place'.
The 3,700 sq. ft., one-storey building is fronted with a roofed colonnade which organizes the entrance to the various public functions.. The colonnade also forms the northern edge of an open public plaza and terminates in a 500 sq. ft. outdoor pavilion which adjoins a pool and watercourse running along the plaza perimeter. The washroom / concession has been designed to withstand heavy use while presenting a welcoming front to the public. Brick exterior walls provide a traditional Ontario visual texture as well as a sturdy finish. Colourful painted steel columns supporting exposed wood structure and large window elements, including a roof 'lantern' on the pavilion, combine to lend a contemporary image to the building. Construction cost, $615K, 1990.
