This project, a new residence for one of the Principals in the
firm, arose due to a fire which destroyed the previous house on the site. The
new house is sited on the property to retain a large tulip tree and a wider
western side yard affording views to English Bay and Vancouver Island. The main
living functions are located on the upper level to take advantage of these views.
The breakfast room and master bedroom step down to a rear garden and terrace.
The lower level contains childrens' bedrooms and a family area which open onto
lower terraces in the side and front yards.
The main living spaces are combined into one large volume with exposed framing
adjacent to clerestorey windows. A large corner window seat opens the living
area to the gardens below. Rainwater is collected from the roofs above and is
directed to specific points into the gardens below. The concrete entry wall
has been shaped to direct rainwater down to the spot where the fire began that
destroyed the original house.
