To increase the viability of a rent-back program offered to Grandview condominium owners, it was decided to expand the original resort's reception building, 'The Mews', into a Conference Centre with amenities targeted at corporate seminars. The mandate for the design team was to provide a cost-efficient building to house a full range of meeting facilities within a building form that was compatible with the traditional Muskoka style expressed in the new wood frame condominiums.
The existing Mews, which contained lounge, small Pub, gift shop and washrooms, was tripled in size adding a new 2,400 sq. ft. conference room sub-divided into three equal, high ceiling rooms; three smaller meeting rooms of 400 sq. ft. each; an 1,800 sq. ft. full-service kitchen; and generous 'break-out' lobbies and circulation areas opening to outdoor decks overlooking Fairy Lake. The Muskoka character is evident in the building's large simple roof form punctuated by dormer windows as well as the sub-division of large glazed areas with heavy wood dividers typical of the local country inns. This character is maintained in the selection of exterior board and batten siding and interior finishes and details which culminate in a massive field stone fireplace in the main Conference Room. Construction cost, $1.1M, 1989.
