Grandview Condominiums

When Grandview Inn was purchased by new owners in 1987, the long-established Muskoka resort (founded, c.1874) on Fairy Lake was badly in need of upgrading and expansion to serve a growing tourist and corporate market. The mandate given to the design team was to retain and enhance the character of the original Inn. The Master Plan incorporates the existing reception building known as the 'Mews' (expanded into a Conference Centre), the existing Inn and Dining Room with 200 new condominiums in nine separate low-rise buildings incorporating a variety of unit types. New common facilities include a Recreation Centre with indoor pool, racquet and tennis courts and a challenging nine hole golf course.

A major design objective was to carefully site the new residential buildings with minimal disruption to the existing lush Muskoka landscape while affording all living units views to the golf course and lake. Building plans and sections were stepped to achieve a high degree of visual interest and to take advantage of the sloping topography. Large cedar shingle hip-roof forms with multiple window dormers typical of the indigenous 'Muskoka cottage' help to reduce the scale of the new buildings. Exterior finishes are warm tone stained wood including horizontal beveled siding with wide trim boards. Balconies off of most living areas are used extensively to reinforce the casual, summer lifestyle and bring further wood details to the building facades. Construction cost, approx. $12.5M (phased construction, not including golf course), 1987-1990.
