Located on Fairy Lake in Ontario's Muskoka vacation region, this 15,600 sq. ft. complex serves the recreation needs of the 100 Acre Grandview Resort condominium development. The recreation centre offers a variety of sports facilities including circular indoor pool with 'shower fall' feature, large whirlpool spa and sauna with poolside lounge and snack bar. An indoor tennis court and exercise area also adjoin the indoor social area. Outdoor facilities include two tennis courts overlooked by licensed bar and patio with seating for 150 and magnificent views across the golf course site
To meet a tight budget and construction schedule, the design incorporates two pre-engineered building systems - steel for the indoor tennis court and glulam timber for the pool. These construction systems offer simplicity for planning and yet opportunities for architectural detailing and finish treatments that support Grandview's resort atmosphere. The use of a timber structure in the pool area has the added benefit of lending visual warmth and ambience to the pool environment while not requiring costly galvanizing finishes to counter the high humidity. Overall finish materials were chosen for both visual impact and ease of maintenance. Construction cost, $1.8M, 1990.
