Jointly for UBC's Department of Education and the Faculty of
Arts, The Colborne Architectural Group Pacific designed an 8,600-sq. ft. computer
lab in the lower level of the existing David Lam Management Centre. Program
space included four main teaching labs with a total of 62 stations, a 5 station
specialized research lab, reception and administrative areas for the two user
groups as well the Faculty Development Centre. State-of-the-art technical facilities
are fully linked to UBC's central computer 'backbone' as well as offering full
digital audio-visual instructional features.
The design incorporates generous glazed walls to open up labs, facilitating
public viewing as well as easing learning fatigue in a space with limited exterior
windows. Tiered seating is used to efficiently configure teaching areas. Special
attention is paid to artificial lighting systems, again to reduce impact on
computer-users during extended class hours. Coloured stain on wood panel presentation
walls, natural wood millwork and strong colour accent panels inject colour and
brightness against broad planes of neutral wall and floor finishes. This project
was completed in 1994 at a construction cost of $530,000.
